Laboratory on geoinformatics and cartography
General description of research:
The Laboratory on Geoinformatics and Cartography (LGC) was founded in 1992. LGC follows in traditions established at the Institute of Geography (Masaryk University, Faculty of Science) by starting the education in the field of Geographic Information Systems in the early 1980’s as the first institution in the former Czechoslovakia. LGC extended already existing education programs by research in GI-science area. In the course of time, LGC became specialized on computer geographical cartography and all its related aspects.
LGC acts as a guarantee of Cartography, Geoinformatics and Remote Sensing study programs at Masaryk University (bachelor, master and PHD degree). There are courses aimed mainly at geographical and/or thematic cartography in computer environment and basic areas of geoinformatics.
The head of LGC, Assoc. Prof. Milan KONECNY, undertook the responsibility of organizing several international conferences. The first two conferences (held in 1987 and 1991) were devoted to Computer Cartography and GIS in the Central and East Europe. After that, Assoc. Prof. Konecny and the staff of LGC organized a series of conferences known as GIS Brno in 1994, 1996 and 1998. Finally, the 4th AGILE conference on Geographic Information Science followed in 2001 and the 3rd International Symposium on Digital Earth in 2003.
LGC participates on several research projects, both at local and international levels. Main national project include Production of GIS in the Czech Republic - Contemporary Condition, Barriers of Increase, Conditions of Optimal Development and of Applications in International Context (1995-1997) and Open Regional Internet Atlas of South Moravia (2003-2005) supported by the Czech Science Foundation. Important international project include INCO Copernicus: Well-GIS, Panel GI, ABDS; IST: WirelessInfo; Leonardo: Urbax2, GISA2E, and also MobilDat and Management of Geographical Data.
Currently, the most important project is Dynamic Geovisualization in the Risk Management supported by the Ministry of Education of the Czech Republic.
Laboratory now acts in three main fields:
- Mobile ways of data collecting, transfer and interpretation GI by ICT
- Electronic Maps and Atlases: Proposal and Design.
- Management of Geographic Data and Information in the Czech Republic and their linkage with European (INSPIRE) and global data projects
